  • Anew

Things that are happening in the studio: a few commissions that need wrapped up (thanks to all for their continued patience), some moderately-sized to small-sized abstractions, and a series of drawings inspired by Audubon imagery. I'm wondering if they won't turn into etchings in the end, but for now, they're drawn. Stay tuned for more updates.

  • BOHEMIA IV

The Factory Studios are hosting our February event this Saturday, Feb. 2nd from 6 - 10 pm.

This month's event will include a two-person exhibit of the work of yours truly and Robert Fifield. Titled Anywhere, this exhibit explore the painted constructs of landscape imagery in a dialogue between symbolism and abstraction. Curated by Mary Laube of The Times Club at Prairie Lights.

"Trees, clouds, and empty roads populate the landscapes of Robert Fifield and Ben Cohan in the exhibition, “Anywhere.” The exhibition tells of a place that is both near and far; a landscape that keeps its distance while
remaining close to home. While both bodies of work hold an apparent individuality, both artists are drawing from familiar landscape iconography. Fifield’s work explores the representation of landscape through the reduction and augmentation of cartographic languages. Cohan’s work uses the romantic possibilities of paint to confront places that are often overlooked. At first glance, the sites may be from anywhere, yet they embody a certain peculiarity that leaves one with a satisfying curiosity." -Mary Laube

Come on out to 321 S. Hamilton St. Sullivan, IL to join us at the Factory

  • Light: Paintings by Lyle Salmi at Gallery 709

Very pleased to announce the exhibit of a former professor, colleague and friend, Lyle Salmi at Gallery 709.

Gallery 709, the space I operate within The Factory Arts Studios collective space, is exhibiting Salmi's paintings for the month of October. Titled, Light, the exhibit features the complexity and subtlety of Salmi's approach to color field paintings on a predominately small scale. Spanning 2011 and 2012, these recent works are a selection of the many that Salmi produces in his Decatur, IL studio.

Professor and chair of Millikin University's art department, Salmi is involved in a number of art endeavors, including the Carriage House Press. Please visit Gallery 709 this month to view the glowing work of Light: Paintings of Lyle Salmi.

    Hello all.
I am trying to get as many photos up as I can to show some more of Studio 709 (aka, the Shop). I am planning to have another open studio sooner, rather than later. If you are interested in stopping by, keep checking the News posts for more information.

  • I finally posted some news.

Look here. I've got some news.
This month, I'll be having a solo exhibit in Harrisburg, IL at the George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Center. The show opens September 14th, closing reception is scheduled to be on Thursday, October 15th. I don't know the time yet, but I'll let you know.

  • Sullivan Arts Council

I thought I would help promote the newly arranged Sullivan Arts Council in Sullivan IL. We have some people in the city who are invested in the spread of visual and performing arts, and I, for one, am happy to hear it. If you are in the neighborhood, Sullivan has two new galleries on the square; New Prairie Gallery and The Second Act Art Gallery.

As always, Sullivan's Little Theater on the Square is still a great place to catch live theater at an affordable price AND in a nice environment.

*Shameless plug: there is also a new studio that will be periodically open to the public called Studio 709. Photos can be seen here. Newer photos will be posted once they are taken. They will show how the space has been turned from an emptied wood-working shop, into a studio space. Check back to see the change. Thanks for stopping by the news section and be sure to check out the food and art options on the square in Sullivan next time you're nearby.

    As usual,
    Ben
